Getting to Charlottesville

Travel to Charlottesville is available by air, rail, and bus. The airport (CHO) is 10 miles north of town, about a 20-minute drive, or $35 taxi fare. American Airlines, Delta, United Airlines, and U.S. Airways have connections to major international hubs of: Atlanta (ATL), Charlotte (CLT), Chicago--O'Hare (ORD), New York City -- LaGuardia (LGA), Philadelphia (PHL), and Washington -- Dulles (IAD). For those adverse to small-airplane travel, Dulles is two hours away, or a $160 taxi fare. Renting a car from Dulles and making the pleasant drive to Charlottesville is highly recommended, and is less expensive. Richmond International (RIC) airport, an hour and fifteen minutes away, provides additional connections.

Rail travel to Charlottesville is possible via the Amtrak Cardinal, Crescent, and Northeast Regional passenger trains. The station is within walking distance of the University of Virginia and downtown Charlottesville.

Inexpensive ($32 one way) bus travel through Greyhound is available to and from Washington DC. Bus travel (with free Wi-Fi) to and from New York is also possible for a $60 fee through Starlight Express.

Getting Around Charlottesville

Within Charlottesville an award-winning bus service allows free travel on the "Trolley" between the University of Virginia and downtown Charlottesville. Or if you prefer, the walk from the Downtwon Mall to the center of campus is about 1.6 km (1 mile). The trolley runs every 15 minutes Monday through Saturday, from 6:35 AM through 11:30 PM.
